There are around 1.2 million homes in the UK currently using oil-fired central heating. The main reason for this of course is that they are located in areas without a mains gas supply.
However, there are other fuel options such as electric powered boilers, coal-fired systems and liquid petroleum gas (LPG). Why choose oil?
Each fuel has its own pros and cons, but most people opt for an oil-fired boiler. Here are some of the reasons why:
- Oil boilers are more efficient than LPG, which means they are cheaper to run.
- There are many more suppliers of oil than LPG, so it is easier to shop around to get the best fuel prices.
- You can run an Aga cooker or stove using an oil fired boiler.
- Oil has lower emissions than electric boilers or hard coal fired boilers.
- Storage tanks for oil are now double bunded, making them highly resistant to leaks or damage and therefore much safer.
- Oil fired central heating systems can be connected to renewable systems like Solar Thermal to further increase efficiency and reduce energy bills.
At Lewingtons, we supply the Worcester Bosch range of oil boilers. They run at 90% efficiency or over* and have been awarded first place for reliability and customer satisfaction in the coveted Which? awards.

Types of oil boiler
There are three types of oil boiler: combination, regular and system. The one you need will largely depend on the size of your home and your requirements.
Combination Boilers, also known as a “combi boilers”, act as both a central heating boiler and a high efficiency water heater. This eliminates the need for separate hot water cylinders and water tanks. Their compact size makes them ideal for installation in smaller properties where space saving is important.
A combi boiler produces hot water on demand at mains pressure, making it more efficient and at the same time, providing a level of performance on a par with a power shower.
Combi boilers are one of the most popular types of boiler, accounting for around two out of every three boilers installed annually in the UK.
Note: It is also possible to have a combination boiler fired by Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG)
Regular Boilers, also known as conventional boilers, require a hot water cylinder in order to function. They are best suited to homes that require a large amount of stored hot water, or homes with more than one bathroom. They are also compatible with solar water heating systems. These boilers require a cold water storage cistern to feed the hot water cylinder and and an expansion cistern.
Regular boilers can also be powered by Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).
System Boilers, also work by using stored hot water. However, unlike a regular boiler, this system has many of the components required to run the heating and hot water built directly into the boiler. This removes the need for a feed and expansion cistern. A system boiler can be connected to either a hot water cylinder or a low pressure hot water cylinder and is again compatible with solar hot water systems.
System boilers are also available for Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).
Biomass boilers can offer you an annual index-linked income while saving you up to £470 on your annual energy bills, and protecting you against further energy price increases. Read more about Biomass boilers here.
Like most central heating systems, oil systems can be designed to incorporate renewable technologies. For further information on renewable options, click here.
