2 minute read

When it comes to choosing the perfect boiler type for your home, there is a range of choice. As with many things in life, as consumers, we just want the equipment we have to be the right choice for us, and to work well. This is why we, as accredited installers, use Worcester Bosch boilers you can rely on!

While our team are happy to come and assess your needs individually, knowing a little more about each type of boiler can help you make an informed decision.

Boilers come in three types: regular, combination and system, with each heating the home slightly differently. Which is best for you?

Combination Boilers

Also known as a “combi” boiler, this type acts as both central heating boiler and a high efficiency water heater within one small compact package, eliminating the need for hot water cylinders and water tanks. Combi boilers are excellent systems to have installed in smaller properties where space saving is important and also produce hot water on demand at mains pressure, making them more efficient with the same levels of performance as a power shower. The combi boiler is one of the most popular types of boiler to be installed accounting for 2 out of every 3 boilers installed annually, and can also be chosen with Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Best for:

  • Compact properties – with no need for a hot water cylinder
  • Limited additional space in property’s loft area
  • Saving costs, due to less piping typically needed

Regular Boilers

Also known as conventional boilers, regular boilers require a hot water cylinder to function. They are, therefore, best suited to homes that require a large amount of stored hot water or homes with more than one bathroom. They are also compatible with solar water heating systems and do require a cold water storage cistern to feed the hot water cylinder and and an expansion cistern. Similarly to combination boilers, regular boilers are also available with LPG.

Best for:

  • Houses with multiple hot water outlets used at once!
  • Properties with loft space for storing cold water
  • Properties with two or more bathrooms

System Boilers

Similar to Regular boilers, the system boiler works by using stored hot water. However, unlike the regular boilers, this system has many of the components that are required to run the heating and hot water, built directly into the boiler. This removes the need for a feed and expansion cistern installed. It can connect to either a hot water cylinder or a low pressure hot water cylinder and is again compatible with solar hot water systems, and available with Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Best for:

  • Properties with multiple bathrooms
  • Limited additional space in property’s loft area
  • Quick and neat installation
  • Economically-aware folks!
