Why renewable heating is the future of home energy

3 minute read

Looking for a way to make your home warmer, greener and more affordable to run? Renewable heating systems offer an efficient, cost-saving solution with the added benefit of reducing your carbon footprint. By harnessing natural energy from the air, the ground or the sun, these systems keep your home comfortable, while also offering the potential to reduce your energy bills.

Here at Lewington Heating, we have been installing renewable energy heating systems since we started our Lewington Renewable division in 2000. Our main focus is fitting air source and ground source heat pumps, a service that has earned us a Worcester Bosch Environment 2020 award. So, you can trust us for all your renewable energy requirements, as well as good advice on when a brand-new traditional system may be more appropriate.

The power of renewable heating systems

Renewable heating systems offer a great many fantastic benefits:

Reduce your energy use

Air source and ground source heat pumps are game changers as they run on free and abundant natural resources. For every unit of electricity they consume, they can output three to four units of heat energy. This means you’ll use less energy overall to keep your home comfortable, all year round.

Improve your carbon footprint

What if you could significantly cut your home’s emissions just by upgrading your heating? A renewable heating system makes this possible. By moving away from gas and oil to cleaner technologies, you’re playing a vital part in cutting carbon and helping the UK achieve its net zero ambitions.

Energy independence and stability

Fossil fuel prices can shoot up with little warning, leading to increased energy bills. However, renewable heating uses the energy that’s readily available in your environment. So, with the right system in place, you’re better shielded against market changes and price spikes.

Increased property value

A home with a renewable heating system isn’t just attractive for environmental reasons; it also signals a commitment to efficiency and modern green technology. This investment enhances your home’s appeal to potential buyers, who are increasingly making greener choices.

Frequently asked questions about renewable heating solutions

Changing your heating system is a big step. Here’s what to consider when weighing up whether renewable heating is right for your home.

Are renewable heating systems suitable for the UK climate?

Yes. In fact, they’re engineered with the UK’s unpredictable weather in mind. Air source heat pumps work efficiently even when it’s as low as -15°C outside, which is well below even the coldest of UK winter days. Modern systems often pair brilliantly with a range of homes, from Victorian terraces to new builds.

What grants or incentives are available for renewable heating systems in the UK?

Installing a renewable heating system does involve a significant financial outlay, but help is at hand. The government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) currently offers grants for eligible air source and ground source heat pump installations in England and Wales. The team at Lewington keeps up to date on all the latest funding, so we can help you get every penny you’re entitled to. You can find out more on our funding page.

How long does installation take?

Installing an air source heat pump typically takes 5 – 7 days and normally involves replacing your hot water cylinder, installing the heat pump outside and associated pipework linking the two.

Ground source systems take longer due to the digging required. Whichever system you choose, our engineers go the extra mile to keep disruption to a minimum and tidy up after themselves, so you’ll only notice the benefits, not the upheaval.

Do I need new radiators or insulation for a heat pump?

Heat pumps work at lower temperatures than gas boilers, so the better your home’s insulation, the more efficient your system will be. In some cases, smaller radiators might need upgrading, or underfloor heating can be fitted for best results. Our team always does a thorough survey before installation and provides straightforward advice on any tweaks your home may need, so there are no unexpected surprises.

What maintenance is required and how long do systems last?

Much like a standard boiler check, annual servicing keeps your renewable heating system running smoothly and maximises its lifespan. Quality heat pumps typically last 15 – 20 years or longer and parts are widely available. Solar thermal panels can last 20 – 25 years with basic care. So, you can rest assured you’ll be set for warmth and savings for years to come.

Finding the best renewable heating system for you

With options including air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and solar hot water systems, there’s a renewable heating solution for every type of property and lifestyle.
