What is a solar hot water heating system?

Sometimes referred to as solar thermal technology, a solar water heating system involves installing panels on your roof to collect heat from the sun. This energy is then harnessed to heat your water.

Constant sunshine is not a prerequisite for a successful solar hot water system as it is designed to work in harmony with your existing immersion heater or boiler, which will kick in when the solar supply runs out.

Planning your hot water system installation

Our solar hot water installers will visit you at your property to assess your home’s sun exposure, structural integrity and available space for the system. Most homes are suitable for solar hot water systems, however this part of the process will determine the best plan for your specific needs. In the vast majority of cases, planning permission is not needed, however, if you live in a listed building or conservation area, permission may be required.

How does it work?

Our expert solar hot water installers will attach flat, dark glass panels to the surface of your roof. When placed here the glass panels trap sunlight in the same way as a greenhouse does. The solar thermal technology works by passing fluid through silicon or copper tubes that are attached to the panels. When the fluid passes through the narrow tubes it absorbs the heat in the panels. This hot liquid is then pumped into your hot water tank, providing you with a renewable and money-saving supply of hot water for your home.

What is the cost of installing a solar hot water system?

The exact amount of money involved will depend on the exact specifications of the system you choose. However, although installing a solar hot water system involves an investment, it will begin to pay off in energy bill savings as soon as it’s up and running.

Indeed, during hot spells in the summer, your solar panels can become your home’s single source of hot water. When you consider that most households use up to 25% of their total energy heating their water, it’s easy to see how savings will be made, particularly at a time when energy bills remain sky high.

Also, it’s important to consider that currently the VAT rate of 20% does not apply to solar hot water system installation.

Maintaining your solar hot water system

The good news is that once they are installed, solar hot water systems are generally very low maintenance, meaning you can enjoy the benefits of free, renewable energy hassle-free.

However, as pioneers in the renewable energy field, we of course offer a servicing and repairs for your solar hot water system, so you can rest assured that your hot water system will be ticking over in tip top condition for years to come.
